Create a New Material

Create a new Standard material. Start with the diffuse color as black (can be customized later). Place the fakeshadow.tif you just created in the Opacity channel.

Applying the Material

Apply this material to the plane. Make sure proportions of the plane are the same as the fakeshadow.tif material. With the map visible in the viewport, scale the plane to size the fakeshadow appropriately.

Applying the Material

Select the original object, right-click and choose properties. Turn on the Visible to Camera box and turn off the Cast Shadows box.

Final render

Your scene will now render the object with a shadow. All that is left to do is to place a plane under both the object and the fakeshadow plane. This will act as your new floor or ground plane. Render a test shot and adjust accordingly. Your result should look something like this.
