Skin Texture :

The Colour map texture of the skin was principally photoshop painted, but mixed with a high res image of a vegetable to minimize the “hand made” aspect. The little black dots on the forearm came from an orchid picture, the different tattoos are issued of different images taken on the web. Adjustments and enhancements were made with zbrush, on an imported .obj file to correct join problems, reinforce shadows and light bumped parts. The bump channel was based on the colour map, converted in greyscale. To homogenise the surface and correct some unwrap problems, I mixed two procedurals cellular texture with it. I previously planned to use a displacement mapping on the head of the character, to add some wrinkles and details. Due to computer crash and memory problems, I finally gave up with this idea.
Rendering :
The image was rendered with vray v 1.09, who gives easily a very quick and high quality global illumination. A hdri map was used as environment on all the elements of the scene. Refraction was faked for all the little metal pieces, using only an hdri map as environment, without raytracing. I used three lights for this scene, one vray for the key light, and two direct spot to give a “Dario Argento” dramatic touch. The blue box visible below is mapped with a self illuminated bitmap, to bring more specular on the squid face. The green one is a deflector, to obtain a bounce light.

The high resolution image took 5-6 hours to render, on my amd 1800 + bi processor...
