Introduction -
SIDENOTE: Fred Bastide tells us that his Uncle Cthulhu character was inspired by the creations of Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) - probably best known as a writer of wierd fiction, or alternatively as the first horror writer of his time. Most of lovecraft's work is unified by a common theme - the Cthulhu (kuh-tool-ew) Mythos - in which gods furtively control the fate of mortals ...
"My uncle Cthulhu" was a personal project, made with 3ds max, photoshop, and rendered with v-ray .
The character was inspired by the Indian God of knowledge "Ganesh", and by Dr Zoïberg from the TV show Futurama.
Of course, it was also a tribute to the universe of H.P. Lovecraft, which was a great source of inspiration for me.

Sketches :
I always begin a new picture by collecting a lot of pictures on the net. Biker, fish and squid images in this case. To have a fresh and personal approach of the character, no one was related to other artists interpretation of Cthulhu.
As preparation, I first made some hand sketches quickly photoshop colorize to find the general tone of the picture, and made a rough plastiline model, to have an idea of the general aspect of the character.

Early Modeling :
I early decided to make the character directly with crossed arms, for more precision on parts with an interaction like fingers contact on the fat of the biceps, deformation of the belly pressed by the forearm, or arms muscles.
I used face and profile pictures of the plastiline mode, as a template in the viewport of 3ds max.
The modelisation was based on the extrude edge method.
