INSIDE / INTERVIEWS :

Q. Are you still working on your film "Short Time Heroes" ? What's the latest ?

Title: Cornwall The incomplete Stonehenge model of mine (which you can also download from our HengeMark 3D website) in the middle of graslands, created using ChaoticDimension's Shag:Hair, backdropped against a photograph with a "typically british evening sky". This is a test for one possible "lighting mood". The whole scenery will eventually be used for the "Kurzzeithelden" teaser sequence.
A. No, Short Time Heroes (or "Kurzzeithelden", which is its original German title) is currently still in the postproduction stage, but I left the team already a year ago. I take it that most readers haven't heard about this project (how could they?). STH is a shortfilm we, a team of film professionals and hobbyists, were shooting in 1999/2000 on 16mm film.
It's a bout the crew of the first faster-than-light spacecraft, doing they first attempt to break the "light barrier", But then a couple of very odd things happen to their reality and perception. At the end of that 35min feature there's some unexpected revelations and the film, that appeared to be just another cheap SciFi movie, turns out to be rather a drama about the actors themselves...
Even though this might sound very vague now, one can imagine that it involves a hell lot of CG, and back then when we started the project, I have taken the challenge upon me alone. Because everyone involved in the project, also the VFX guy (me), only did it to gain the ultimate reference for his/her own portfolio, that's why we have been very ambitious and tried to do as much as any person could accomplish in their respective field of responsibility. No matter if it was the director, DoP, the actors or technicians.
But meanwhile this very purpose of the project also became its curse. We all wanted to finish STH and THEN use it as a reference to get (better) jobs in the industry. But for me this effect came already after some WIPs of the space station and related scenes had been plugged on the web. I felt like on candid camera, because I literally received job offers almost instantaneously and thereby slowly lost my ambitions to continue working on it, as meanwhile my priorities had shifted of course.
For much too long I maybe didn't want to admit it, but I just didn't have the spare time any longer to get the things done as I had wished for. My expectations for the quality of my own work on it were certainly too high and I somehow did not want to let it become anything short of just eye-popping, only to get it done "in between" my other jobs. So we (the director, producer and I) met each other last spring and I offered them to hand out all the until then existing models and concepts, so that they could give it to anyone else interested it finishing this movie at long last. I don't know much about the current status, but apparently they either haven't found anyone being crazy enough for it or him/her is also still busy with it, which I could understand very well. All in all I wish them the best of luck, though. This movie could really be awesome, even though or maybe just because it is just a shortfilm with very little budget. But I really hope it will be finished soon, because it's been 5 years now since we started shooting!
Apart from that I did not pursue any personal projects again, because if I've had the time, I'd for sure STILL try to get the "Heroes" VFX done. So all I did was just maybe a little exercise now and then, but nothing worth to show. I will include a few WIPs though for you to post here :-) But please, don't be too picky. These are really just incomplete things I either lost interest finishing them or did not have the time.
That's also why my website has this rotten smell to it since 2002 ;-)
