Title: Detention The idea for this scene came when I was watching one of those old "Derrick" episodes. Some locations had this typical interior design of the seventies and early eighties, so I thought it would be interesting to create such a linoleum corridor. The blurry reflections on the walls and the floor were also a great experiment to test-drive finalRender Stage-0 beta.

The Interview
Q. Hello Schloerby, tell us a little about yourself ?
A. First off, thanks for the honor of being featured on your great site. Uhmm, what am I gonna tell you about myself? There isn't very much of interest. I'm 28 years old, live in a city near Frankfurt/Germany, am lucky enough to have a very nice girlfriend, who not only tolerates my chaotic working times, but even encourages me to go ahead and keep it going, even when I feel like being burnt out, which happens quite often. Usually being a CG Artist and also having a halfway normal life with your partner (who is NOT into CG at all) don't go well together. So I'm happy to say that currently there's nothing left to be desired for me. I'm grateful for how it all went so far and I'm looking forward to the times to come :)
Q. Explain to us how your early days as a cartoonist & political caricaturist led to your work as a CG Artist ?
A. Actually it did not lead me to CG. It was more of a parallel thing. Always having drawn and painted as long as I can remember, I started doing caricatures semi-professionally at the age of 14. And just a little later also had my first encounters with an awesome DOS program named "Autodesk 3D Studio". Back then there was no WWW and my copy of 3DS unfortunately did not come with manuals, either ;-)
So it turned out to become a terribly long learning process and it wasn't until 1994/95, that I got anything done with it that finally resembled a "picture" at all. Meanwhile I was working as a political caricaturist for our local newspaper, probably the youngest one in Germany. Only today I realize, that in fact it had scored me quite a bit of fame in my city back then. And yet, during all that time from 1990 to 1995, my interest slowly shifted from those traditional arts to computer graphics. It was much more promising to explore the new possibilities 3DS and later MAX offered, as opposed to what I could do with a pencil (and others did much much better). Also I liked the circumstance, that back then I really knew nobody else who shared this hobby. So I felt a bit like a pioneer in my little world, spending night and day in front of my PC, totally forgot about school and eventually also unlearned my drawing skills.
Nowadays I think it was the right way, even though it seemed rather frightening for my parents, that I had f*d up my school career just because of being so addicted to my PC and 3DS. And yet I sometimes wished I could just resume my caricaturist life again. No expensive software upgrades, no steep learning curves for new tools, no crashes, no electro smog, no stupid long render times... ;-) Maybe I will actually do that some day.
