Q. You're a very active participant in various online communities, moderating at CGtalk and 3D4ALL (of which you were the founder) and judging at Raph. Where does this zeal for communication come from ?
A. About CGTalk and Raph, I got invitations from the owners to help them in some way and I was honored, of course. About 3D4ALL it was a different thing. I decided to create a community to really help people, providing more information in Portuguese (the language we talk in Brazil). Not everybody speaks English and was hard to these people to find information in Portuguese, well, at least quality information. So, I decided to create and share tutorials, really explaining how things are done. I also intice other users to do the same. This way, our community grew fast and we have today over 5500 registered users, not bad for a community that speaks mainly Portuguese. I like to help others but in my rhythm, you know. I have very few moments of spare time and I prefer to use it with my wife or to learn something new than answer tons of emails I get everyday. I just cant. So, when I have the time, I write tutorials to teach stuff where people have more problems to learn. This way, I feel good giving something to help others but at same time I cant feel bad because I answer to a very small part of my emails. Some people get mad at me because I dont answer to them but hey, we all have complex lives and not everybody takes the time to help others as I do with my tutorials and community, think about that ;)
I do that just because I feel good helping and sharing knowledge with others. I think if you really believe in your art you should have no problem sharing knowledge with others. You can teach technical stuff but nobody will ever get into your head to take your ideas, the main substance of your work. So, dont be afraid J
