INSIDE / INTERVIEWS :

Q. Your creations have two striking characteristics - an incredible attention to detail, and a tendency for fantasy. How do you explain these preferences ?

A. The attention to the details is something I always had. This is probably a psychological characteristic of mine. I love to add small details because I love to see them in other artist’s works. I love to see something well presented and “full of surprises”. Just take a look in some of the amazing paintings of Jeronimus Bosch. I love this kind of “delirium” where you can free your mind to tell your own story about every single detail in his work. I just hate obvious works with no meaning at all. That’s why a mere reproduction is not considered art. Can be a great technical achievement but have no meaning, tells no story and produces no brainstorm. It’s a simple contemplation to something created beautifully but technically, nothing more. You can make a simple portrait interesting by adding something intriguing to it. The old masters taught us how to do it, not the “3D guys”. Just take a look to the amazing self portrait series created by the master Rembrandt to see what I’m talking about. That’s why I find the art done by them so important for new generations. I like to present some fresh element, something funny to the composition, something symbolic to the work, something that can make different people think about different stories and I think I achieve part of my intention using these details. The pure “virtuosism” alone is “silly” imho but when used to serve ideas it can be a great instrument. The fantasy is also part of my personality. The reality is BORING since ever. Is it the fantasy some kind of escape from the reality? Maybe, maybe not. Maybe everything is part of our “reality” and our reality includes the conscious mind but can perfectly include our unconscious mind too, why not? The unconscious is always working to balance our conscious when we are sleeping, for instance. That’s the way we didn’t get crazy everyday JSo, I can think my unconscious mind is part of my reality and also of your reality when we put the unconscious as a “public domain”. So, I think fantasy is part of everyone of us. It’s part of art and religion. It’s part of the children and the adult. It’s part of the human being as a whole. That’s why I prefer fantasy: it’s open to everyone and full of possibilities. Realism? Pretty darn boring! J
