The Interview
Q. Hello Krishnamurti, can you tell us a little about yourself ?
A. I’m a Brazilian self-taught CG artist working in the movie industry since 2004. I was a banker for over 16 years, working with CG only as a hobby. I started drawing at the age of 5 and I was always passionate about art in general and these are also my favorite books today. I got my first job in the industry as character animator for the upcoming movie “Barnyard”, created and directed by Steve Oedekerk. One month before the expiration of my Visa, close to the end of my contract at Omation Studio, I got an interview at CafeFX, located in a small town called Santa Maria, California. I liked the people and the offer and got the job over there. The studio grew quickly and now we are all working in a huge building, with a nice new screening room, a pool table not far from my desk and even a bowling alley (yeah, crazy guys to put this thing inside of the studio!) and some more fun stuff. I consider my co-workers as very talented and dedicated guys.
My bosses are very cool guys and I had no problem at all adapting to the new studio, where I’ve been working for about one year already. I’m married and things are hard for me and my wife because she is living in Brazil and I’m living in the USA. We see each other every six months but of course it’s not enough. We hope we can find a good solution to be together soon. Right now this is impossible but CafeFX owners allowed me to stay with my wife for some months while I send the work remotely to them (I have no words to say for how thankful I am for this!). I’m always trying to add some meaning to my art, tell a story. I love doing “exercises”, like, sculpt a head or some 3D anatomy study but these are only studies and have no artistic value IMHO. That’s why I prefer complete pieces, where I can tell a little story and make people wonder what that work is all about.
Q. Who are your mentors / heros in the world of 3D ?
A. I think 3D is just another kind of media where I can produce my art. This way, I can’t tell you I have heroes or mentors in the 3D field. I can tell you that some traditional artists are the true heroes behind my work and inspiration. Guys like Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Goya, Dali, Van Gogh, Caravaggio, Delacroix, Picasso, Rodin, Mozart, Bach (yeah, music is also a huge inspiration and can be very visual, believe me) among many many others. These guys created something, or at least transformed something already created to something that’s abasis for many visual theories used and known today. They are the true masters, not us, the 3D artists. Maybe some day some of us will have some value for future artists but the old masters will be always the main inspiration for many of us. Some of the “CG guys” have my big respect but I can’t tell you they are my heroes in any way.
