Q. You're extremely well known for your works using POV-Ray, but you also
> master other 3D tools such as Cinema 4D, Poser etc. Today, what are your
> software preferences ?
A. Well the only 3D tool that I can claim to be comfortable with is
POV-Ray, and it took me ten years to get there, otherwise my
experience with other apps is still limited, so take what follows with
a grain of salt.
- Poser I dearly love and without it I would probably have stopped
doing 3D. It's quite fashionable to dismiss it, often for good
reasons, but until recently there were no good modelling software free
or cheap enough for hobbyists, so, as far as characters were
concerned, us hobbyists were stuck with robots. For me, Poser changed
all that.
- Rhino was my first true modeller. I'll probably use it less now,
because I prefer subdivision surfaces to NURBS, but I always found
Rhino to be a shining example of a piece of software written with the
user in mind: intuitive interface, perfect help system.
- Cinema 4D and Bodypaint: I'm still learning them and I've barely
scratched the surface. They're both intuitive but there's so much to
learn, so many features that with my limited free time I won't be
really proficient with them before a couple of years (remember that
I'm a newbie in GUI-based 3D and that I spent 10 years scripting
images). I love what I've been doing with them though.

Q. Tell us about your latest CG project ?
A. It's a series of images called "The Apartment'", which features the
different rooms of a fantasy house. It's a Cinema 4D project and
except a Poser model I'm doing all the modelling myself, so it's a
good way to learn C4D and explore different techniques. So far, I've
done the bathroom and I'm completing the bedroom, so I've still a lot
to do!
Q. What are your hopes for the future ?
A. I'd really like to become more proficient in other 3D techniques:
GUI-based modelling, character design, animation etc., all things I
never got to do with POV-Ray. It's a lot of learning, but it's fun.
Q. One final question - have you read any great books recently ?
A. I finished China Mieville's , which should be
a fantastic source of inspiration for 3D artists and a perfect
material for a CG movie - just think of the creatures and all the
texturing... Before that I read David Foster Wallace's , which is a tough read but really worth it, and the sort of
writing I find inspirational. I borrowed from it the "Season of the
[bizarre stuff here]" concept for titles that I used for the Variation
series.
Thanks Gilles :)
You're welcome...
