INSIDE / INTERVIEWS :
Title: Speedorc "Like many of the models I've built, this guy was a speed modelling exercise that I went in and polished up later on. The original head took about 45 mins to model at the GDC... but later I went in and added displacement maps, hair... the works."

The Interview

Q. Hello Dave, can you tell us a little about yourself ?

A. I was born in the UK but grew up in Australia, which gives me a bizarre hybrid accent that I am told is fairly close to Kylie Minogues. I became a professional digital artist about eight years ago when 3dsmax 1 had just hit the shelves. Since then I have contributed to a lot of games... characters for Unreal Tournament 2004, Civilization IV, Warlords: Battlecry, and the up and coming Dungeons & Dragons Online. Most people would know me from my live modelling demos and lectures at trade shows. I have just started to bottle them up as Dave Kings 3D Creature Workshop DVDs which I will shamelessly plug here by saying they are over at Turbosquid.com - cheers!

Q. Who are your mentors & heros in the world of 3D ?

A. Heros huh? My most influential artists are Weta's Bay Raitt and Kenneth Scott from id. Bay's spiraloid website helped me get hooked on polymodelling and Kens Quake III textures just blew my mind... I just spent days staring at the textures and trying to work out how they where done! If we are on the subject of heros and mentors in general, I would have to say Jim Henson is top of the pile, shortly followed by Ray Harryhausen, of course. I really dont have any mentors... I learned my skills back in Australia when there where no real 3d animators about. I had to teach myself.
