Q. A lot of time can be spent making modifications or editing a project to suit a client’s desires. Is there a way to avoid this time consuming process ?
A. There’s no way to avoid it, it’s part of the service we offer. However, acting from the very beginning with the knowledge that it’s going to happen will make it much less painful.
Spell out the milestones in the contract, get each milestone signed off, and warn the client in advance if something constitutes a change order (or if your patience for free changes is running out). Then get change orders in writing. Again, clients respond very well to honest communication, even if it’s about a difficult matter. “You know, changing that facade you already signed off on will add a day to the deadline and $X to the bottom line” is infinitely preferable to a surprise on the bill at the end, or the frustration of doing extra work for free.
If the project involves active design development, and you know that going in, try to work on an hourly basis rather than as a flat fee, because projects like that are by definition impossible to estimate.
