Q. A lot of professionals do not refuse clients out of fear of losing money. Should you accept anyone who walks in the door ?
A. No. If youre in this business as a career, you need to think not only about the next check, but about your portfolio as well. Big names and good architecture will go a long way towards getting the next job down the road.
Furthermore, there exist clients who come to the table with unrealistic expectations. I find that being honest and forthright with clients is a great strategy in every situation - if you cant rein in their expectations on a level with what you can deliver, being honest about it and sending them away is best in the long run. They may even come back to you later after finding out the hard way that some other firm promised what they couldnt deliver. Of course, being able to do this means having a good sense of your own capabilities and speed, which can only come from experience.
