THE PRODUCTION PROCESS >|
I made four versions of the robot-worker. Hi-res version were used for the hero character, medium and low lighter versions were used for the background characters.
Texture painting was one of the most time-consuming tasks in the production. All the textures were painted by hand.
Key lighting were made just after texturing, and lights and textures were refined at the same time. A lot of tests were made in lighting, texturing and rendering to achieve the look that i wanted for "Brothers". Most of the scenes were lit using standard lights and rendered using the scanline default renderer, but for some scenes featuring the character "El Guardian" i used global ilumination.
All the elements in the scenes were rendered as separated layers. Some scenes features several layers of robot-workers rendered separately, and composited in post.
In most of the scenes for the foreground character, shadow, specular, diffuse and reflection were rendered in separated passes as well. Some scenes with fog or depth of field required a Z Depth separate pass.

POSTPRODUCTION >|
All the compositing process and colour correction was made in After Effects. Smoke, dust, background robots, pipes or columns were reused from key scenes, to avoid innecessary, time consuming 3d work.
Sound is basic in a film without dialogue. Musician Chris Badge composed and performed the amazing music score for the film. Sound design was also carefully planned to inject ambience and mood.
Five years after the beginnig, "Brothers" was finished. Because it was a one man project, production was long and slow, but i really enjoyed it.
"Brothers" was finished on the 26th of july 2005 and it was screened in several animation festivals across Europe.
